Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor has cleared the NFL's concussion protocol and is on track to start the season opener Sunday versus the New York Jets, a source told ESPN's Field Yates.

The Bills, however, placed No. 2 quarterback T.J. Yates on injured reserve with a concussion, meaning rookie Nathan Peterman will likely back up Taylor for the foreseeable future.

Taylor returned to practice Monday, signaling that he was close to being cleared.

The veteran pivot will oversee an offense that will rely heavily on him and star running back LeSean McCoy following the trade of wide receiver Sammy Watkins.
