The Pittsburgh Steelers have restructured defensive end Cameron Heyward's contract, saving over $3 million in cap space for the upcoming season, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Heyward was previously slated to earn $5 million in base salary for the upcoming season, while carrying a $10.4-million cap hit.

The 28-year-old recorded 21 tackles, three sacks, and four pass deflections in seven games last season, before suffering a torn pectoral muscle against the Dallas Cowboys in November.

Heyward has been a key component of the Steelers' defense since being selected in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
