Giants GM takes responsibility for 1-6 start
The New York Giants were billed as sleeper Super Bowl contenders prior to the season, as hard as that may be to believe now, and general manager Jerry Reese is taking responsibility for his team's disastrous start.
Odell Beckham Jr. suffered a fractured left ankle, the team's upstart defense has regressed badly, and the Giants find themselves entrenched at the bottom of the NFC East.
"We're 1-6. This is not where we want to be, but this is where we are," Reese said Tuesday to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. "This is my roster. I'm responsible for everybody on the roster. I'll take ownership where we are right now, the 1-6 start. I do believe we still have good players on this roster, I do believe that."
Reese suggested the Giants grew complacent after reaching the playoffs in 2016.
"When you win 11 games, you've got a little bit of a swagger about you," Reese said. "Then you come back (thinking), 'Well, this is pretty easy, we won 11 games,' and we won 11 games with a rookie head coach. So you come back and think, well, we've already got 11 wins, and that's just not how it works."
Reese added, "I don't think we played as hungry as we did last year. I think that's evidence for me. I don't see the hunger coming out of the gate. We played hard in some games, but there is a difference between playing hard and having that hunger that you have to have to win in this league."
Entering their bye week offers the Giants time to reflect upon their start. They'll need to essentially win out in order to make it back to the playoffs.
