Though Colin Kaepernick landed the cover of GQ magazine's "Men of the Year" issue, the former NFL quarterback didn't speak to the publication in an interview.

Instead, Kaepernick chose to remain silent, as he's found his silence has amplified his protest against police brutality and the oppression of colored people in America.

The magazine's editors instead spoke with those in Kaepernick's inner circle: filmmaker Ava DuVernay, rapper J. Cole, activist Tamika Mallory, and others.

Kaepernick did, however, agree to be photographed in Harlem, invoking images of Muhammad Ali from the 1960s when he trained in the streets of New York as local children surrounded him.
