49ers players take exception to fans cheering after Beathard's injury
A number of San Francisco 49ers players were upset with what they heard from their home fans when quarterback C.J. Beathard sustained an injury in Sunday's game.
Beathard was removed in the closing minutes of the 24-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks after taking a hard hit, and was replaced by Jimmy Garoppolo, whom the 49ers acquired at the trade deadline.
Fans who'd likely been excited to see Garoppolo debut for the team cheered as he entered the game, but that didn't stop Niners players from being upset with the reaction.
"I don't think it was malicious by our fans and they were cheering his injury. I think they just got excited, but, at the same time, you can't do that," longtime 49ers left tackle Joe Staley said, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. "That kind of is a bad look."
Some of his teammates had even stronger opinions.
"That pisses me off," safety Eric Reid said. "I'm disappointed in our fans. I understand the excitement about Jimmy, he's a great player. But that's not right."
"Our fans, I was disappointed in them when they were cheering. Our fans are better than that," rookie linebacker Reuben Foster added to reporters after the game, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
