Reid says Chiefs' skid is on team, not just Alex Smith

Andy Reid continues to defend quarterback Alex Smith amid the Kansas City Chiefs' midseason slump.

The Chiefs have lost five of their last six games and have scored just one touchdown in the last nine quarters.

The team's head coach believes the blame isn't on the quarterback alone.

"I think it's not just Alex," Reid said on Wednesday, via the team's website. "Each position has got to do better. This is a team game and so everybody has a piece of the pie. You're bringing it to Alex. I'm bringing it to all of us doing a better job. Alex is part of the team so he's included in that. But it's surely not just one person."

After the team's latest loss, a 16-10 defeat at the hands of the Buffalo Bills, Reid said he did not contemplate replacing Smith with rookie backup Patrick Mahomes. He remained firm that the veteran will be under center in Sunday's game against the New York Jets.

"The thing I can do is stand before you and tell you that this isn't an Alex Smith thing, it's all of us," Reid said. "I know our players understand that and coaches. So we're all going to do better and raise our game up."
