Report: Garoppolo, 49ers gaining steam on long-term deal
The San Francisco 49ers and pending free-agent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo have gained significant momentum on a long-term contract extension, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
A deal could reportedly be finalized in the near future and is expected to make Garoppolo one of the higher-paid quarterbacks in the league.
The 49ers went 5-0 with Garoppolo in the starting lineup to finish the regular season, and the 26-year-old has yet to lose any of the seven games he's started in his career.
Garoppolo completed over 67 percent of his passes for 1,560 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions after being acquired from the New England Patriots before the midseason trade deadline. The Eastern Illinois product spent three-plus seasons backing up Tom Brady in New England.
San Francisco could place the franchise tag on Garoppolo if they're unable to work out a long-term deal before free agency.
