If the Washington Redskins try to use the franchise tag to recoup some value for Kirk Cousins, the quarterback could follow in AJ McCarron's footsteps.

Cousins has been tagged for the past two seasons, and the Redskins all but sealed his departure by reportedly agreeing to trade for Alex Smith.

If Washington tries to tag and trade Cousins, however, the veteran pivot intends to file a grievance arguing that the Redskins violated the purpose of the tag, Albert Breer of MMQB.com reports. The designation is intended to help teams sign players to long-term extensions.

On Thursday, McCarron reportedly won his grievance against the Cincinnati Bengals and will now become an unrestricted free agent.

Cousins is expected to challenge for the title of the NFL's highest-paid player if he hits the open market.
