Report: Jags will try to re-sign Robinson ahead of free agency
The Jacksonville Jaguars reportedly have a big plan for the $12.6 million in cap space they've freed up since Friday.
The team is turning its attention to trying to sign soon-to-be free agent Allen Robinson, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The Jaguars have until March 6 at 4 p.m. ET to apply the franchise or transition tag to the wide receiver for the 2018 season - a decision that would cost them an estimated $16.05 million. A longer deal could allow the team to bring Robinson back at a lower cap hit.
Free agency opens at 4 p.m. ET on March 14.
Jacksonville freed up cap space by releasing veteran running back Chris Ivory on Friday and signing quarterback Blake Bortles to a three-year extension Saturday that reportedly lowered his 2018 cap number by $9 million. The Jaguars now have roughly $30.5 million available, according to Over The Cap.
Robinson suffered a torn left ACL in Week 1 of last season and missed the rest of 2017, including his team's first trip to the postseason since 2007. He was drafted 61st overall by the Jaguars in 2014, recording 202 receptions on 386 targets for 2,848 yards and 22 touchdowns in 43 games.
Rookie Keelan Cole was the Jaguars' most productive receiver. He played in all 16 games but made just six starts, leading the team with 748 yards on 42 receptions. Tight end Marcedes Lewis caught a team-high five touchdowns.
