Report: NFL expected to change coach hiring rules in wake of McDaniels fallout

The NFL is considering changing the rules prohibiting teams from hiring coaches who are working with an active team, even in the playoffs, according to Judy Battista of NFL.com.

Coaches are typically allowed to interview for openings while their current team's season is ongoing, but a hiring can't be made official.

The proposed change has failed in previous league discussion but is expected to have greater support in the fallout of New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels reneging on a verbal agreement to become head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts prematurely announced the hiring of McDaniels before he had formally signed a contract. He ultimately chose to stay in his current role with the Patriots. The Colts hired Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich as a fallback with few other viable candidates perceived to be available.

The Detroit Lions were successful in officially hiring Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia the day after New England's Super Bowl LII loss to the Eagles.
