Beane: Bills happy with Taylor, Peterman 'until we decide different'
Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane offered some vague support for the quarterbacks on his roster while speaking Wednesday at the 2018 combine.
"We're seeing what's out there. This year it's been well publicized there's more veteran quarterbacks that are out there," Beane said, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "And we have to do our recon on those. If we see something that seems like it's a good fit for us and upgrades us, then we would look to do that. But, again, we're happy with where we're at with Tyrod (Taylor) and Nathan (Peterman), until we decide different really."
Beane offered a series of lukewarm compliments toward Taylor, who helped the Bills end a 17-year playoff drought in 2017, before losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the wild-card round.
"Tyrod is on our roster right now and that's the plan," Beane said. "We're just taking it day by day, and like every position, we're trying to get better everywhere. So we're looking at every position, including quarterback. But Tyrod did a lot of good things for us. ... I see him on our roster right now. Unless something changes, he'll be here through that part."
Taylor's been the Bills' starter for the past three seasons. He was named a Pro Bowler in 2015, after spending his first three years in the league as a backup with the Baltimore Ravens.
He started 14 games in 2017 but played in 15, completing 62.6 percent of 420 pass attempts for 2,799 yards with 14 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He added 427 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Taylor is set to earn a base salary of $10 million in 2018, though he carries a much larger cap hit of $18.08 million, according to Spotrac.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported last week that the Bills are unlikely to cut Taylor without having a replacement at the ready.
"The Bills are OK with paying a $6-million roster bonus to keep him on the roster," Rapoport said on "NFL Up To The Minute Live."
Peterman started against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 11 when head coach Sean McDermott attempted to make a switch under center. Peterman would throw five interceptions on just 14 total attempts. He debuted in place of an ineffective Taylor the previous week and completed 7 of 10 attempts for 79 yards and a touchdown against the New Orleans Saints.
He'd also get the call to start in Week 14 against the Indianapolis Colts, while Taylor was sidelined by a knee injury. Peterman fared a bit better in his second start, completing 5 of 10 attempts with a touchdown in heavy snow, but was replaced by Joe Webb in the third quarter after suffering a head injury.
