Redskins will give Super Bowl rings to 1987 'scabs'

The Washington Redskins will honor the team's 1987 replacement players, who went 3-0 during the NFLPA labor strike from Week 4-6, for their contributions to the team's championship season.

Those players, also the subjects of a 2017 documentary called "Year of the Scab," will receive Super Bowl rings, though an exact date for the presentation hasn't been announced.

"The 3-0 record of the Redskins replacement players was part of the remarkable success of the 1987 Washington Redskins," owner Dan Snyder said Wednesday, according to the team. "Their contributions are part of Redskins history and represent an integral reason why a Lombardi Trophy from the 1987 campaign resides in our facility today. Thanks in part to the generosity of our partners on this project, we are happy to honor these players."

The replacement players weren't previously recognized as part of the championship team, largely due to NFLPA members' displeasure that they crossed the picket line. Most of the replacements were cut immediately after the strike was resolved, but they did receive a share of the money for the victory.

Washington defeated the Denver Broncos 42-10 to win Super Bowl XXII, the second Super Bowl and fourth world championship in the franchise's history.
