Giants improve offensive line by taking Will Hernandez

The New York Giants have selected guard Will Hernandez out of Texas-El Paso with the 34th overall pick in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Hernandez was widely considered one of the best offensive lineman in the draft and is a superior pass blocker. After the Giants selected Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick, Hernandez will expected to play a key role in the running game.

Boasting excellent footwork, Hernandez is expected to be a key contributor for a Giants' offensive line that has struggled immensely in recent years.

Strengths

• Unusually agile for his size. Combines quick, balanced footwork with thick frame to cover space. Likes to move downfield with the play.

• Aggressive finisher who can stand his ground in pass protection and doesn't move backward when run-blocking. Powerful upper body.

Weaknesses

• Shorter for a guard than teams would prefer. Defenders with above-average wingspan can gain advantage.
• Gets caught trying too hard to land powerful blow off the snap. Loses position hoping for big blocks.
• Can forget to use his natural leverage when blocking downfield. Pops pad level up after initial block.
