Andrew Luck hasn't stepped onto an NFL field in 16 months and has yet to resume throwing since a setback in his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery in January 2017.

While the Indianapolis Colts are confident the star quarterback will be ready for the start of the upcoming campaign, there are some who believe Luck will never be the same player again - if he manages to return at all.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard said his franchise player is raring to prove to his doubters that he remains among the league's elite.

"I think he's got a little bit of a chip on his shoulder to prove some people and naysayers wrong," Ballard told Sporting News' Alex Marvez on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "That's a beautiful thing with a quarterback that I think is top five in this league."

Luck will return to a radically different offense. New head coach Frank Reich is installing a similar scheme to the one he ran with the Philadelphia Eagles, while the likes of Donte Moncrief and Frank Gore left in free agency.
