Maple Leafs' Johnsson accepts qualifying offer for 1-year deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed winger Andreas Johnsson to a one-year, two-way contract Friday, the club announced. His deal is worth $787,500 at the NHL level.

Johnsson is coming off a stellar campaign for Toronto's AHL affiliate, as the speedy Swede racked up 26 goals and 28 assists in 54 regular-season games for the Toronto Marlies. He also scored 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) in 16 playoff games en route to a Calder Cup title and the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as AHL playoff MVP.

Johnsson tallied two goals and an assist in only nine regular-season games last year with the Buds, but after such a strong 2017-18 showing, he should have a much larger opportunity to crack the big club's lineup straight out of training camp.

The 23-year-old accepted the Leafs' qualifying offer that was proposed at the end of June. He'll become a restricted free agent at the end of the 2018-19 campaign. Johnsson was drafted by the Leafs in the seventh round (202nd overall) in 2013.
