The NFL's concussion settlements could jump from $1 billion to $1.4 billion due to thousands of more retired players filing claims, lawyers representing the players estimated, according to The Associated Press.

Participation rates are 21 percent higher than predicted and could continue to grow. Estimates are based on the number of players who have either officially filed a claim or given notice that they will.

According to the filing, 499 claims totaling more than $485 million had been approved as of Monday.

The NFL was denied in its request Wednesday to appoint a special investigator, with the judge saying the league's attorneys did not establish "sufficient evidence of probable fraud to warrant serious concern."

The January 2017 settlement compensated thousands of players who sued the league over failing to share the dangers of concussions.
