Rookie Sam Darnold has a "very fair shot" to win the New York Jets' starting quarterback job out of training camp, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Jets have maintained all offseason that Darnold, who's still just 21 years old, would be given a legitimate chance to claim the starting gig before the start of the regular season.

Darnold, who missed a few practices at the beginning of training camp because of a holdup in signing his contract, is battling veterans Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater for the top spot on the depth chart. He has reportedly impressed Jets brass so far, showing more development than the team expected.

The Jets selected Darnold third overall in the 2018 draft, anointing the USC product their quarterback of the future.
