It was inevitable.

After seeing the same faces in training camp for weeks, the Washington Redskins and New York Jets met in a joint practice. With the opportunity to finally hit someone else for a change, the Jets and 'Skins did that and more during Sunday's practice, and their scruffle made national news.

"That's what happens when you get in joint practices," Redskins cornerback Josh Norman said, according to the North Jersey Record's Andy Vasquez.

"Personally, I think practicing against ourselves would be better. But I don't make the rules and I certainly don't make those calls."

According to Redskins.com's Jake Kring-Schreifels, the skirmish began when Jets corner Trumaine Johnson pushed Redskins lineman Morgan Moses down after a running play. That led to an exchange of words on both sides, other confrontations, and eventually pushing and shoving.

"I just saw a cheap shot, whatever it was you know, it is what it is," Redskins tackle Trent Williams said to Kring-Schreifels. "It's football, man. It's football. It's a lot of grown men, a lot of testosterone in the air ... things happen."

To no one's surprise, the head coaches didn't approve of the scuffling.

"Intensity is good. Fights are not to be tolerated," said Jets head coach Todd Bowles. "We are not trying to fight them and they're not trying to fight us. They want to be boxers and wrestlers, they probably want to be in another sport."

"Yeah, it's unfortunate," added Redskins head coach Jay Gruden. "We got a lot of good work done throughout the course of the day and sometimes that gets overshadowed by an unfortunate incident. It's behind us now, we're going to move forward today and get a lot of good work done."

Both teams have another joint practice on Monday ahead of a preseason clash on Thursday.

"I talked to my guys and Gruden talked to his guys and we'll just have better practices tomorrow because that is just a waste of time to me," Bowles said.
