Retired Colts announcer admits to using an 'inappropriate word' off-air
Two days after his abrupt retirement from radio play-by-play duties for the Indianapolis Colts, Bob Lamey released a statement Tuesday, admitting to using an "inappropriate word."
A radio employee filed a complaint against Lamey, stating that he used the "N-word" in an off-air conversation after an interview, Jennie Runevitch of WTHR reports.
The employee filed a human resources complaint on Aug. 15. Two days later, the Colts got in touch asking for more information. Two days after that, the team announced Lamey's retirement.
The radio broadcaster of 35 years issued a statement through his attorney Tuesday.
"It should be noted that Bob does want to acknowledge that while repeating a story while off-the-air last week to a friend at a local radio station, he used an inappropriate word that had been used in the story," James Voyles said in the statement obtained by Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star.
"Bob immediately apologized to the people involved for the comment and would hope that this error in judgement would not tarnish his long-held reputation in the sports community where he has been known as an accurate and passionate reporter."
Voyles stressed that Lamey was not fired by the Colts.
