After Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor briefly exited Thursday's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a wrist injury, rookie Baker Mayfield had the opportunity to play with the first-team offense.

Mayfield completed 8 of 12 passes for 76 yards and one interception overall, delivering just one field goal in the process.

While the No. 1 overall pick's stat line is a bit misleading - he once again flashed poise and accuracy against a tough defense - he was not pleased with his effort.

"Not my best game by any means," Mayfield told reporters, via Ohio.com's Steve Doerschuk. "(I'm) disappointed in myself.

"I would never say it is a good opportunity when our leader and captain goes down, but getting out there with the ones, that is something that I need to do. I did that, and that is why I am disappointed in myself. I didn't take advantage."

Mayfield said he was "fixing to go back into the game" after Taylor was cleared to return, but understood it wasn't his decision. Browns head coach Hue Jackson was not as hard on his signal-caller.

"I thought (Mayfield) did some good things," Jackson said. "Baker has completed some huge balls and made some plays. Obviously, the interception was unfortunate. He was getting hit as he was trying to throw.

"I think he sees the NFL is a grind. It does not always go the way you want it to, and you just have to fight through, keep playing and keep making plays, and I saw that in him. There is no flinch in him at all. He competes."

Jackson said Mayfield could start in the team's preseason finale against the Detroit Lions, and is already focused on things his rookie quarterback should work on.

"(He'll work on) taking care of the ball and getting the ball out quicker," Jackson said. "Get it into your playmakers' hands. The defense had a bunch of turnovers. We have to take advantage and feed off of that."
