The Denver Broncos waived quarterback Paxton Lynch, the team announced Sunday.

Lynch was taken 26th overall by the Broncos in the 2016 NFL Draft. Although he avoided being released Saturday, the Broncos claimed quarterback Kevin Hogan on waivers Sunday, rendering Lynch expendable.

Throughout the summer, Lynch failed to impress and was eventually surpassed on the depth chart by Chad Kelly. Case Keenum is expected to start for the Broncos with Kelly and Hogan serving as his backups.

"(Broncos head coach) Vance (Joseph) and I met with Paxton this morning and informed him that it's best for everyone to make this move. We appreciate all of Paxton's hard work as a Bronco, and we wish him well in the future," Broncos general manager John Elway said in a statement.

Lynch played sparingly during his first two seasons, completing 61.7 percent of his passes for four touchdowns and four interceptions.
