Falcons HC Quinn: Red-zone offense needs to change
Falcons head coach Dan Quinn was quick to highlight one of the main things his team will work on in practice next week after Atlanta came away with just nine points inside the red zone in a season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
"Our ability to score down there, that has to change," Quinn said Thursday night, according to Curtis Crabtree of Pro Football Talk. "We weren't able to do that tonight. Give credit to them. We knew coming in this was going to be a good matchup defensively, offensively, and all in different areas, but that part of our game clearly tonight we didn't execute at the level we'd like and we've got work to do."
Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan went just 1-for-9 with an interception inside the Eagles' 20-yard line, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
Atlanta struggled near opponents' goal lines throughout last season. It finished 2017 ranked 23rd with a touchdown rate of just 49.18 percent in that area of the field, according to TeamRankings.com.
The Falcons left the season opener with just one rushing touchdown and a field goal out of five red-zone trips. Quinn says those scoring issues may be the only thing holding the team back this season.
"We're going to go back and look, for sure, and you know we put a good bit of work in there and we still have more to do," Quinn said. "By no means is this game going to determine" (2017) is over. This is (2018) and that's part of our game that we have to get right if we're going to be really good."
