Report: Gordon's impending release not due to substance abuse violation
The Cleveland Browns' decision to release wide receiver Josh Gordon on Monday wasn't a result of a new substance abuse violation or a failed drug test, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Gordon's time in Cleveland apparently came to an end due to a hamstring injury suffered in a promotional shoot; the receiver was also late to the team facility Saturday.
The 27-year-old has four previous substance abuse violations. Any new infraction would result in another yearlong ban that essentially acts as an indefinite suspension - Gordon would again have to apply to the league for reinstatement.
Gordon will be a free agent if released, and it's likely teams will view him more favorably without the concern of an impending violation.
