Panthers release veteran tailback C.J. Anderson
The Carolina Panthers released tailback C.J. Anderson on Monday, ending his tenure with the club after nine games, according to Max Henson of the team's official site.
"When we signed C.J. in the spring he saw a bigger role than he has had, and honestly, at the time, so did we," general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement. "But Christian McCaffrey has taken so much of the offense and so much of the plays, we just made the decision that this was the best thing for all parties involved."
Anderson landed with the Panthers on a one-year deal in May after he was released from the Denver Broncos. The 27-year-old spent all five of his previous NFL campaigns in Denver, rushing for a career-high 1,007 yards in 2017.
Carolina signed Anderson to serve as a bruiser behind McCaffrey, but wound up giving the California product just 24 carries over nine games. Anderson posted 104 yards on the ground this season and recorded his only touchdown with Carolina on a 24-yard reception in Week 3.
