49ers release Reuben Foster after domestic violence arrest
The San Francisco 49ers announced the release of former first-round linebacker Reuben Foster after he was arrested on a domestic violence charge Saturday night.
Foster remains in jail as of Sunday morning, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The 49ers were adamant that Foster's future with the team was in jeopardy following previous domestic violence charges, which were dropped in May after his ex-girlfriend, Elissa Ennis, recanted her claims.
"It's extremely disappointing for me, for Kyle, for ownership, for everybody in here," 49ers general manager John Lynch said, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "We care a lot about Reuben and I can tell you it's a situation where we laid out some very specific ground rules for Reuben, as we do for all our players."
Foster has started six games for San Francisco in 2018, racking up 25 tackles.
"What transpired yesterday - this isn't a comment on what happened there because that would be mere speculation on our part - it's more of a comment on him not living up to what we have communicated, and to the energy and the time we've invested in him," Lynch said.
The 31st overall pick of the 2017 draft was suspended for the first two games of the season after he pleaded no contest to a weapons possession misdemeanor.
