Shurmur dismisses Beckham's criticism of game plan vs. Eagles
New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur disagrees with Odell Beckham Jr.'s assertion that the team's game plan Sunday didn't involve attacking the Philadelphia Eagles' banged-up secondary as much as it should have.
"We ran the ball 18 times, we threw it 37," the first-year coach said Monday while reflecting on the Giants' 25-22 loss, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "That is twice as many throws as there were runs. We had seven explosive gains in the passing game. The only team that we played that we had more was Carolina. We had eight."
Beckham hauled in five receptions on nine targets for 95 yards against the Eagles but was left frustrated by another loss. He said after the contest that the Giants should have been more aggressive in the passing game, but "that wasn't in our game plan."
"You'll have to ask him to define it after he watches the tape but I felt like we were doing the things necessary to win the game," Shurmur said. "We still got production in the running game, had a couple third-down calls in the red zone that were close. If we get those in, it's a different story."
The Giants held a 19-3 lead at one point in the second quarter but squandered it in the second half. They scored just three points after halftime.
"That was one man's opinion after an emotional loss," Shurmur added. "But what happens is you get an opportunity to get a good night sleep, you watch the tape, maybe change his opinion."
The Giants fell to 3-8 with the defeat.
