Gurley: I want the rushing title
After saying he was fine with head coach Sean McVay's decision to hold him out of Week 17 last year, Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley admitted to feeling let down by missing out on the rushing title.
"Yeah, I was lying, I really did care about the title," Gurley said, chuckling, according to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times. "That would be a pretty cool thing to get."
Gurley finished his third campaign with 1,305 rushing yards, finishing 22 yards behind Kareem Hunt after entering the final week with the lead. He again finds himself in a tight race in 2018, as he holds a 26-yard edge over Ezekiel Elliott of the Dallas Cowboys with four games left to play. He doesn't want to let the achievement slip away.
"I tell people that all the time: It's like you play for team goals but who wouldn't want to be the NFL sack leader? Who wouldn't want to be the NFL passing or rushing leader?" he said.
The 11-1 Rams head into a Week 14 meeting with the Chicago Bears having already locked up the NFC West and are closing in on home-field advantage through the postseason.
Gurley is also leading the league in rushing touchdowns, yards from scrimmage, and total touchdowns for a second consecutive season. Only Elliott has more rushing attempts.
While McVay hasn't indicated his plans for his MVP candidate running back down the stretch run, Gurley's continuing to put team success first.
"I'm just going to focus on these next couple of games and whatever happens, happens," Gurley said. "I'm just happy that we were able to clinch a playoff spot and just go from there."
