Rex Ryan has begun contacting ex-assistants to gauge their interest in joining him if he lands a head coaching job in Miami next year, league sources told Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

Ryan, a current ESPN analyst, reportedly believes he has a solid chance of being hired by the Miami Dolphins - if Adam Gase is fired.

Salguero's report initially stated that Ryan also thought he had a chance to land the lead job at the University of Miami. But Ryan reportedly views himself as an NFL coach at heart and his preference is to coach the Dolphins.

The Hurricanes are no longer an option anyway - Miami has hired former defensive coordinator Manny Diaz just weeks after he left to take the head coaching job at Temple.

Ryan spent eight seasons as an NFL head coach, going 46-50 across six campaigns with the New York Jets and 15-16 in two years with the Buffalo Bills. He led the Jets to AFC Championship appearances in 2009 and 2010.

The 56-year-old acquired a reputation as one of the brashest coaches in the profession during his NFL years. He's also known as a defensive guru.
