Raiders hire NFL Network's Mike Mayock as GM
The Oakland Raiders announced Monday the hiring of NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock as their general manager.
Mayock, a former safety with the New York Giants, spent the last 14 years with NFL Network after concluding his playing career.
Oakland reportedly fulfilled the requirements of the Rooney Rule by interviewing former Giants executive Marc Ross, a source told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
Mayock is viewed as one of the NFL draft's premier analysts and has become a prominent part of the NFL Network's coverage of the event. However, he has zero front-office experience.
The 60-year-old apparently already has a close relationship with Raiders head coach Jon Gruden.
New Raiders' GM Mike Mayock once interviewed and met with Al Davis for the same job he is getting now. Mayock spent part of last summer with the Raiders, observing Jon Gruden. Now will be working directly with him.

Thanks in part to his 10-year, $100-million contract, Gruden has significant say in the Raiders' personnel decisions - which was reportedly a major concern for some of Oakland's GM candidates.
Mayock's first task will be maximizing the two extra first-round picks the Raiders own in the 2019 draft.
