Wilks out as Cardinals head coach after 1 season
The Arizona Cardinals fired head coach Steve Wilks on Monday after just one season, the team announced.
Earlier in the day, ahead of a meeting with owner Michael Bidwill, Wilks informed his staff he wouldn't be returning next season, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The 49-year-old is expected to be a top candidate for coordinator roles around the league, added Rapoport.
The team also fired offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and defensive coordinator Al Holcomb, according to ESPN's Josh Weinfuss.
Wilks won just three games in his rookie campaign, the fewest in the NFL, after coming to the desert following one year as the Carolina Panthers' defensive coordinator. The Cardinals' 3-13 finish is tied for their worst record since 1988.
Arizona owns the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft and has a young quarterback in Josh Rosen, but the Cardinals lack the roster depth and allure of some of the other head coaching openings, such as the Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers.
