The Cleveland Browns relieved former defensive coordinator and interim head coach Gregg Williams of his duties on Wednesday, sources told ESPN's Dan Graziano.

The decision to part ways with Williams came on the same day that Browns offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens was reportedly promoted to become the team's new head coach.

Williams had been with Cleveland since 2017. He led the team to a 5-3 record as the interim head coach in the second half of the 2018 season after replacing Hue Jackson, as the Browns finished third in the AFC North at 7-8-1. It was their highest win total since 2014 and their best finish in the division since 2010.

However, the defense ranked just 21st in points allowed during 2018 and gave up more total yards than all but two other teams.
