Cowboys hope to extend Prescott this offseason

Dak Prescott has one year remaining on his rookie deal, but the Dallas Cowboys are intent on paying him before he needs to be.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team wants to get a deal done with Prescott this offseason because he's more than earned it and it's the right thing to do, according to Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Jones added, however, that the first order of business will be attempting to reach a new deal with pass-rusher DeMarcus Lawrence.

Prescott, 25, took over starting quarterback duties in his rookie year and has yet to miss a regular-season game. The two-time Pro Bowler led Dallas to the divisional round of the NFC playoffs in two of his three campaigns.

The 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year is set to earn $2.04 million in base salary on the final season of his entry-level contract.

Star running back Ezekiel Elliott is also entering the final year of his contract, but he's eligible to be retained through 2020 via a fifth-year option. Jones said Elliott isn't going anywhere, either.

"We've got it budgeted that we're going to pay Zeke a significant contract at some point," Jones said. "He's right at the top of the best in the business, if not the best, and we certainly saw what (Rams running back Todd) Gurley got paid and we know that's probably where it starts and we'll go from there."

Gurley inked a four-year, $57.5-million extension in July.
