Browns sign former Steelers safety Burnett

The Cleveland Browns signed free-agent safety Morgan Burnett, the team announced Friday.

Burnett will ink a two-year contract worth up to nearly $9 million, with almost $4 million fully guaranteed, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The Pittsburgh Steelers released Burnett at his request on Monday, just one season into a three-year, $14.35-million deal.

Cleveland has been active at the safety position this offseason. Former starter Jabrill Peppers was part of the trade for Odell Beckham Jr., three-year veteran Derrick Kindred was cut, and Eric Murray was acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs for pass-rusher Emmanuel Ogbah.

The Browns also pursued star safety Eric Berry after the Chiefs released him; it's unclear how Burnett's signing would affect the team's interest in the five-time Pro Bowler.

Burnett racked up 30 tackles and six passes defensed in 11 games last season. The 30-year-old had four seasons with 90-plus tackles and amassed nine interceptions during his eight-year stint with the Green Bay Packers.
