Tom Brady no longer allowed to play in preferred helmet

The NFL released its helmet laboratory testing performance results Friday and it will result in a significant change for Tom Brady.

The New England Patriots quarterback and six-time Super Bowl champion will have to find new headwear as the grandfather clause that allowed him to play in a prohibited helmet has now expired following the results of the NFL's study, Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports.

In fact, 32 players will now have to switch to approved helmets.

"The prohibited helmets will not be allowed in the locker room. A player will not be allowed on the field (wearing such a helmet)," NFL executive vice president of health and safety initiatives Jeff Miller said Friday.

Brady has played in a Riddell VSR-4 helmet, which is now one of 11 helmets prohibited for all NFL players.
