Former vice president Joe Biden is running for president of the United States, on the Democratic ticket, in 2020.

A video making the rounds this week shows Biden saying in 2006,

"I do not view abortion as a choice and a right. I think it's always a tragedy."

Mr. Biden made the remark in an on-camera video interview he did with the Texas Monthly's former CEO Evan Smith (now at Texas Tribune), which CNN resurfaced on Thursday.

"I think it should be rare and safe," Biden also said in that 2006 interview.

"I think we should be focusing on how to limit the number of abortions."

Strangely, "holding men accountable for impregnating women" never entered into the range of possibilities upon which he and other male lawmakers have since focused.

In the video, Biden refers to himself as a "little bit of an odd man out in my party" because he "wouldn't vote for federal financing of abortions, had voted to limit late-term abortions, but supported Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed the legal right to the procedure," notes the New York Times in its coverage of the video, and what it means for Biden's campaign today in 2019.
