“Free Everything” and the First Law of Politics

The economist Thomas Sowell once observed that the first lesson of economics is scarcity: there's never enough to fully satisfy human wants. He also observed that the first lesson of politics is to disregard the first lesson of economics, a lesson many presidential candidates appear to have learned all too well.
