San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, will miss all four exhibition games because of the sprained ankle he suffered Wednesday at practice.

"We won't see (him) in the preseason and we'll go from there," general manager John Lynch told Matt Maiocco of KNBR-680 on Thursday. " ... We'll get him right and he'll be a great player for a long time in this league."

Bosa was one of three notable 49ers to go down in Wednesday's session, joining cornerback Jason Verrett and wide receiver Marquise Goodwin.

Lynch described Bosa's injury as "significant," according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, adding it includes elements of a high-ankle sprain but isn't full-blown.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed later Thursday that Verrett also suffered a significant ankle injury and will be on the same timeline as his rookie teammate, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The defensive back will miss the entire preseason with the hope he can return for Week 1.

Bosa tore an ACL in high school and missed several games at Ohio State last year because of a core muscle injury.

San Francisco is counting on Bosa and offseason acquisition Dee Ford to ignite a defense that ranked 22nd in total sacks and 28th in points per game last season.
