Rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins had a less-than-stellar preseason debut for the Washington Redskins, completing 8 of 14 passes for 117 yards and two interceptions in a loss Thursday.

The first-round pick is competing with veterans Case Keenum and Colt McCoy for the starting job, and head coach Jay Gruden admitted the rookie still has some work to do before he can leapfrog the more experienced passers.

"I'd say the vets probably have a little bit of a leg up on him, just because they're vets and they've played," Gruden told The MMQB's Albert Breer.

"... Just because of their knowledge of third-down and red-zone concepts. There's a lot Dwayne still has to learn, but he can get there," Gruden added.

Keenum, acquired via trade this offseason, is learning a new system and McCoy has yet to appear in a game since breaking his leg late last season.
