After returning to practice Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon suffered a setback in his recovery from a torn ACL.

The setback was a flare-up in McKinnon's surgically repaired knee, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Meanwhile, 49ers general manager John Lynch acknowledged on KNBR radio that the development was "not encouraging," according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

McKinnon signed a four-year, $30-million deal with San Francisco last offseason, but then tore his ACL in September and missed the entire 2018 campaign. This year, he was expected to fight for a role in a crowded 49ers backfield that added Tevin Coleman this offseason and also includes Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert.
