Ezekiel Elliott is leaving Mexico and flying to the Dallas area in case a contract extension with the Cowboys gets worked out, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Upon arriving in Dallas, Elliott's agent Rocky Arceneaux said both parties are "very, very close" to reaching a new deal.

According to Rapoport, there are still obstacles in negotiations with the franchise.

Elliott set up shop in Cabo, Mexico, at the beginning of training camp and stayed there throughout the preseason while holding out for a new contract.

It's unclear whether the Cowboys will have their two-time rushing champion when they open the regular season Sunday versus the New York Giants.

"It's Tuesday - on Tuesday, you better be preparing with the people you've got available to you for Sunday," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told a local radio station shortly before the news of Elliott's travel plan broke, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.

"We're working with the people that we have out here now and the ones we have that we know are going to be on the field. That's how we're preparing. It will be great - will be and would be great - if before a short period of time passes that Zeke would be in that group. But we'll see how today goes. We'll see how tomorrow goes. We'll see how the ensuing hours pan out."

Elliott has two years left on his rookie deal.
