Best way to see what is on then securely wipe a bad drive

Besides taking a drill to it :) what's the best way to force a mount so i can browse it, and then securely wipe an old mechanical hard drive that only auto mounts about a hundredth of the time IIRC, to give you an idea of what kind of shape it's in.
