The New York Giants announced receiver Sterling Shepard suffered a concussion during the team's season-opening loss to the Dallas Cowboys, according to NJ.com's Matt Lombardo.

Shepard entered the NFL's concussion protocol, clouding his status for Week 2's matchup with the Buffalo Bills.

The Oklahoma product was expected to make significant strides in his fourth year after Odell Beckham Jr. was shipped out in the offseason. However, Shepard has struggled with injuries, just recently working his way back from a broken thumb that forced him to miss part of training camp.

With recent addition Golden Tate on a PED-related suspension for the first four weeks of the season, any time Shepard might miss would put the G-Men in a bind at receiver.

The next men up at the position would be Cody Latimer and Bennie Fowler, neither of whom has ever taken on a prominent role over the course of their careers.

Shepard contributed six receptions for 42 yards during Sunday's blowout loss. In 2018, he put up 65 grabs for 683 yards and a career-high eight scores in a secondary role.
