ProtonMail or Tutanota easier to set up on my Desktop computer for a non-techie?

I just went to actually get Tutanota. (All I want to use it for is on my Desktop computer (and I confess my ignorance about email clients etc)). Just like Gmail or Yahoo, I want to open ProtonMail or Tutanota on my Desktop computer.
But trying to get Tutanota (it seemed easier than getting Protonmail) (I ran VirusTotal on the appimage file and figured all I had to do was check the hash) I ran into this 'verify the signature' thing. And it gives a Github address and another one and it says Linux should already have this OpenSSL utility and by then I'm thoroughly confused on how to verify the signature.
Equally confusing is ProtonMail. To get it on the Desktop I need to use a "bridge" (and I believe getting the bridge is no longer the free plan), which involves adding my protonmail account to the bridge and by then I'm thoroughly confused again.
So keeping in my mind what I want to use one of the accounts for (on my Xubuntu 18.04LTS 64 bit Desktop computer) I have these questions.
1) If protonmail, do I need the "bridge"?
2) Does having the bridge bump me up into the paid plan?
3) Is Tutanota easiser to install on my Desktop? (It seems like just runningi the appimage file.)
4) How do I verify Tutanota's signature?
