Old computer can access internet but new computer has not learnt settings from the modem
by grumpyskeptic from LinuxQuestions.org on (#4QXQM)
Background:
I have installed the latest version of Linux Mint on a "new" recycled computer, while I am currently using an older computer with an older version of Linux Mint on it. I intend to stop using the older computer in a few days time and replace it with the newer computer.
I only have one old external modem, but it still works well so I have no reason to replace it.
I always completely turn the power off for the computer(s) and also the modem when I am not using them. I never leave things on stand-by.
Problem:
My old computer (Dell Dimension 5150) running Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa Cinnamon has no problem accessing the internet via an ethernet cable and an external modem (Smartax mt882).
My "new" recycled computer (Dell Inspiron 531) that I have just installed Linux Mint 19.2 Tina Mate on will access the internet without any problems if I switch on and start the old computer and the modem and then (while keeping the modem switched on) unplug the ethernet cable from the old computer and plug it into the new computer.
But, when I turn everything off (ie turn the power off for both computer(s) and modem) and then start the new computer with the modem already plugged in, then it cannot access the internet.
I had hoped that the new computer would learn and remember the internet settings from the modem, but it has not.
Questions:
How do I get the new computer to access the internet?
Is there some way to get it to learn and remember the settings from the modem?
Comment:
I recall always having this problem whenever I have installed a new operating system. Only Puppy Linux helps you get connected.
Thanks.
