Advice sought on restoring critical OS files

Hi - it's me again ...
It had to happen. After more than ten years with Linux I finally managed to erase critical files in root. The system boots, but complains about missing files in /usr/sbin and bails out. I don't know how many sub-directories are affected, but /boot seems o.k. and /home appears to be intact.
I am using Arch Linux and have the latest installation program on DVD. Would it be possible to use this to install just enough applications to get the system running? I have been thinking of chrooting, but I fear I am missing (some of) the files it requires. If I could install files selectively from Arch's install program, perhaps chrooting would be unnecessary?
Or must I eat the sour apple and make a full re-install?
What do you think? Manjaro? :-)
