Visual Code Studio?

Somewhat new to Linux here. Played with it a number of years ago when I first started working in the I.T. field and continued with it off and on until I left the field. I just recently retired and was at the point to where I was just fed up with MS, apple, as well as chrome os, and decided to take the Linux plunge fully head on as well as begin to delve into programming beginning with C.
Thus far it's a wonderful ride, but I really have to ask developers a question about IDE's, and no it's not the 'which is the best one' type of question.
My question is.....why Visual Studio Code? Personally, I left M$ to get away from the bottom dollar software control freaks, found a couple of IDE's to work with when I felt too lazy to use the command line (which honestly is most of the time), and have thus far enjoyed it all. I know that at a certain point if I do keep at it and learning I'll likely want and/or need more functionality than what I perhaps have with geany, but I have to think that Linux itself was developed a great deal without IDE's (thinking vm and vim, perhaps gedit and so on) and the IDE type of software that was used a few years back didn't have all the bells and whistles that even a number of todays tools do.
I know that many Linux aficionados don't necessarily abhor the big and evil corporate computer software conglomerates, but many of us have developed a disliking for it all. And yet I see and read that a number of developers use their (M$) Visual Studio Code software. Yeah, it's free and all that. And yes, it's open source (or is it? Is it open source or proprietary freeware?).
Don't get me wrong; i'm not knocking it. I actually have it installed on my chromebook with GalliumOS to try it out and I can see the draw. Sleek interface, a myriad of plugins to extend functionality, themes, git support, and on and on. Plus, it just seems to work, and work well.
But, when I'm testing it out with my chromebook on my meager learner projects instead of something like geany or eclipse on my regular laptop, I end up asking myself why did I leave M$ products only to use another M$ product on a different operating system? Not that I'm boycotting, and it's not necessarily like anyone is boycotting this or that OS or product, but still.
So, I'm essentially just curious. Why do so many Linux dev's utilize an IDE from someone like M$. Is it simply that it just works well? Are there no others that work as well? Is it just all about the taste/preference of the individual?
Again, I'm not knocking it, and thus far I really do like it. I may eventually end up using it as my main piece of coding and development software. Still, with so many Linux users being about Free and Open Source Software, why do many utilize a piece of software from a company that is essentially about the dollar and not really at all about free and non open source software?
I feel that somewhere along the line I missed something and would love to hear from other developers, both new and experienced.
