The New York Giants are expected to be without star running back Saquon Barkley for the next four-to-eight weeks due to his high ankle sprain, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

An absence closer to eight weeks is considered more likely, Schefter adds. Barkley could be sidelined until the Giants' Week 11 bye, setting him up to return for the team's final six games.

Head coach Pat Shurmur confirmed the injury Monday but noted the team will "just have to see" in regards to Barkley's time frame.

The multi-week estimate confirms earlier reports that Barkley would miss games. He was spotted on crutches after injuring himself Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A Buccaneers defender attempting to tackle Barkley twisted the dynamic back's ankle shortly before halftime. The Giants quickly announced he wouldn't return to the game.

Wayne Gallman and Elijhaa Penny are the only other running backs on New York's roster. Gallman led the backfield following Barkley's injury.
