DHCP failed to start...

I just did a full installation of Slackware 14.2 (64-bit) on my desktop PC, accepting the default choices proposed. The desktop is connected to the AT&T modem/gateway via an Ethernet cable. My desktop environment is KDE.
When I start X (as root because I have not yet created a user account), KDE continuously shows the following notifications:
* Connection "Wired connection 1" activated
* DHCP failed to start
* Connection "Wired connection 1" deactivated
The internet connection seems to work just fine. If I launch Firefox I can surf without problems.
How do I get rid of the above notifications? I found this other posting:

but I have no line that says:
Code:dhcp=dhcpcd
