New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard is in the concussion protocol for the second time this season, the team announced through its official injury report.

Shepard suffered a concussion in the season opener and sat out the Giants' Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills. He's now facing an extended absence, a source told Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.

The Giants have a quick turnaround this week, as they'll head to New England for a Thursday Night Football showdown with the Patriots. The club then returns home in Week 7 to host the Arizona Cardinals.

Shepard's absence will vault offseason acquisition Golden Tate into a role as the top wide receiver for rookie quarterback Daniel Jones. Tate hauled in three receptions for 13 yards on six targets in his Giants debut Sunday after a four-game suspension to open the campaign.
