Ubuntu 14 - Nvidia driver hangs the OS at the login screen

Setup: ubuntu 14.04 persistent on a Lexar Tough 32gb usb (3.0), 20-60 Mb/sec write speed.
Works fine, until I enable the proprietary Nvidia driver (341), which causes the impassable logon screen (no combination of login+pass work - "incorrect credentials").
CTRL+ALT+F1 shows an infinite production of spam messages into console regarding the said drivers. Have anyone else encountered the said problem before? Thank you.
